Data Analysis & Visualization

Data visualization, signal processing and source reconstruction applications can divided along a number of dimensions; free or commercial, compiled or interpreted code, basic to advanced signal processing. The free or commercially available dimension is essentially self descriptive. However, it is important to keep in mind that most of the “free” analysis packages operate on the Matlab platform, not as stand-alone applications. One notable free, stand-alone application is LORETA (and sLORETA). EEGLab is now offered as a stand-alone application as well. Commercially available packages vary greatly in their capabilities and in their prices.

Compiled (or stand-alone) applications versus interpreted code vary primarily in speed of execution. Invariability and almost without exception, compiled analysis software will complete tasks much faster (often orders of magnitude) than signal processing based on interpreted (i.e. m-file Matlab) code. The downside of compiled or stand-alone signal processing packages is the closed architecture; the user is limited to perform analyses available within the software package and cannot generate a “new” analysis on their own.

Feature requirements for data analysis and signal processing are very user dependent - no one size fits all. Consequently, Sensorium has made a conscious decision to a provide data format that is broadly accessible by both free and commercially available data analysis and signal processing packages. We will work with you to find the solution that works best now with your research needs and budget keeping mind what your future requirements might be.
