DBPA Acquisition Software and Stimulus Integration
Defining Excellence in EEG means ensuring that you can not only ensure the highest quality and most accurate timing of the physiological signals, but also ensure the timing integrity of the stimulus, response and third party device signals. Painstaking efforts have been made both with the DBPA hardware and software interface to account for the various third party interface devices, from stimulus systems to eye trackers and other analog input devices.
For instance, it is widely known that stimulus systems running under Windows system have a multitude of timing anomalies. While many of the stimulus system providors have developed elaborate workaround solutions, virtually none of the EEG manufactures have considered this in their system design. Sensorium, has developed a solution to account for these timing anomalies, where the stimulus event information is captured digitally via standard TTL pulse and then validated using an external photodiode identification of stimulus onset. This validation check ensures accurate timing of ERP’s and thus a more accurate average representation.
Similar considerations have been given to audio stimulus signals. An optional audio transducer system is available that measures the RMS voltage from 20-20KHz and converts the amplitude to DC, which is used as a stimulus event trigger. This method is a hardwired approach to ensure accuracy of audio trigger timing. Audio signals take on all types of wave forms, so designing a circuit for all wave forms is difficult at best and most don't work well. Our approach using the RMS based voltage generates a specific DC amplitude depending on the specific RMS voltage. This means that the trigger point can be at any in range DC voltage.
